Street To Be Named After Fignon in Montpellier

MONTPELLIER, France, July 8, 2011 (AFP) – A street named after the late two-time Tour de France winner Laurent Fignon will be unveiled here on Sunday July 17, the day that the Tour rolls into Montpellier.

The road is just a short distance from the finish line of the 15th stage and is situated in front of the Stade Yves du Manoir.

Fignon’s widow Valerie, another double Tour winner Bernard Thevenet and leading officials of this year’s Tour will take part in the ceremony to honor the man who won the race in 1983 and 1984.

He missed out on a third victory in 1989 by just eight seconds when he was pipped by the American Greg Lemond.

Fignon died August 31 last year at the age of 50 after suffering from cancer of the digestive system.

At the time, French President Nicolas Sarkozy hailed “an extraordinary and exceptional champion who will forever go down in the history of the Tour de France, in French cycling.”
