Race Begins Saturday
Gilbert is nursing a deep cut above his left knee that required eight stitches after he was involved in a pile-up on the penultimate stage of the Eneco Tour of Benelux last Saturday. Gilbert arrived in Spain Wednesday and was cleared to ride his BMC teammachine SLR01 for the first time by BMC Racing Team’s on-site physician at the Vuelta, Dr. Roger Palfreeman. “After some manual therapy of the physiotherapist, I did a session on the trainer,” Gilbert said. “Despite some pain, it was possible to ride. After this, we decided to try on the road, where I was able to ride for one hour. At this moment, I am not able to put out power while I am pedaling, but hopefully this will be the next step. We will try tomorrow.” Last year, Gilbert scored two of the BMC Racing Team’s three stage wins at the race, which begins Saturday with a 27-kilometer team time trial. The BMC Racing Team’s roster also includes reigning Italian road champion Ivan Santaromita, who starts his Vuelta while two others will make their first appearance in the Spanish grand tour: Sebastian Lander and Danilo Wyss. The other five riders on the squad – Yannick Eijssen, Martin Kohler, Klaas Lodewyck, Dominik Nerz and Italian national time trial champion Marco Pinotti – are starting the Vuelta for the second time.
