Emblem Bicycles was created to design unique, one-of-a-kind bicycles, which are tailored to the rider’s goals and riding style. When Founder Craig Pelletier first bought a bicycle, he sort of knew what he wanted to get and how he wanted it to ride, but didn’t know what to get. When he figured it out, he couldn’t buy it anywhere.
Craig wanted to make bicycle buying as good as an experience as bicycle riding, thus starting EMBLEM Bicycles. Emblembicycles.com is an online bicycle retailer that lets you design unique one-of-a-kind bicycles, while learning about all the choices you make.
On the website, there is a truly remarkable design interface. You start out with a frame then begin to add bike parts to it. Each part has its own “stat-lines” so when you pick each part, you can see a read out about that part’s weight, how it is over hills and terrain, how easy it is to ride, to name just a few examples.
There is also a recommendation system that helps you get started with your build. It takes information on your riding style and what’s important to you and gives you a read out of what might work for you and why. You can make every configuration you can imagine. You can pick every component from cranks to shifters to cogs, while the stat-line lets you know exactly what tradeoffs you’re making. The site guides you through the whole process, by supplying unbiased information and giving you component recommendations, based on your priorities.
When you are done building your bike, you will receive a unique serial number key chain to signify that your bike is truly one of a kind. When, or if you need a replacement part or upgrade, you can check in on the website and it will tell you what parts you will need and what is guaranteed to work on your bike.
There are 5 bikes in the line so far. Three are produced in Asia, and their premium line of bicycles is hand-made in the United States. “Big bicycle companies don’t produce here anymore, because the cost became too much” says Craig, however, you can’t substitute for the skill and precision of American manufacturing. But it is nice to see from one supplier with both a low and high end of the spectrum.
They do make the website experience fun, hopefully as fun as riding itself! Whatever you choose, or whatever the online recommendation the website helps you choose, you will surely be making your own unique “one-of-a-kind” bicycle.
