One Arm Willie Stewart To Take On SPY Belgium Waffle Ride

One Arm Willie Stewart
Stewart to Cycle as Ambassador of Benefiting Charity—the Challenged Athletes Foundation®

CARLSBAD, Calif.—San Diego-based innovative eyewear brand SPY®—known for its happy irreverence—announced today that Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF) ambassador and extreme athlete “One Arm” Willie Stewart will be racing in the upcoming SPY Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) on April 7, 2013.
An above-the-elbow amputee who lost his left hand in an industrial accident in 1980, Stewart will be competing in the grueling 130-mile race complete with water crossings, dirt and some of San Diego County’s toughest roads. Stewart will join 350 other cyclists to complete the challenge to benefit CAF, a San Diego-based non-profit that helps individuals with physical challenges get involved—and stay involved—in sports.
Nicknamed “One Arm” Willie, Stewart is an inspiration to challenged and able-bodied athletes alike. He’s twice conquered the grueling Leadville 100 MTB, competed at the Ironman World Championships three times, named Ironman Outstanding Age Group Athlete, kicked up dirt in the XTERRA Series, raced the Balance Bar 24-Hour Adventure Race, HURT 100K run in Honolulu, Hawaii, and kayaked the Grand Canyon with one-arm.
Now in its second year, the SPY Belgian Waffle Ride is a unique and extremely challenging Spring Classic cycling event. In true Flemish fashion, the BWR will feature moules-frites, ale, waffles, and more ale, plus a 130-mile cycling extravaganza with 10,000 feet of climbing through scenic North County San Diego. The event has attracted a who’s who of cycling icons, including Olympians; World, National and State champions; local professional and amateur cyclists; and surf, motocross and bike industry luminaries. The event kicks-off at 6:30 a.m., April 7, at SPY’s Headquarters on 2070 Las Palmas Dr., Carlsbad, CA 92011, where from Noon until 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 6, there will be an Event Expo for participants and spectators alike. The Expo will also run all day on Sunday, April 7.
“We are very excited to have Willie join our start list of cyclists to take on this challenge,” says Michael Marckx, SPY president, CEO, and creator of the event. “This is a tough course, where the athletes’ physical and mental strength will be pushed to the extreme. The opportunity to race side-by-side with Willie will provide unique inspiration and generate awareness for CAF.”
Registration for the event has been filled now with a cap of 350 entrants. Registered SPY Belgian Waffle Riders will help support the event’s cause, the Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF), whose mission is to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. Sponsors of the event include The Lost Abbey Brewery, SQUADRA, BRL Sports Nutrition, GIANT Bicycles, SRAM/ZIPP, RIDE Cyclery, Skins, SKLZ, PowerBar and WD-40.
