JONNY MOLE FROM ITALY WINS THE TAIPEI CYCLE D&I AWARD 2013
At the recently held edition of the TAIPEI CYCLE D&I AWARDS 2013, an event organized by iF DESIGN to reward the best projects in the bicycle industry, one of the winning entries was “The Dream Machine”, a futuristic racing bike designed by the Italian agency Jonny Mole Design ( jonnymole.com).
A prestigious jury made up of experts and well-known designers from the bicycle industry awarded “The Dream Machine” first prize in the Bicycles section.
The project by the Jonny Moletta Studio competed with 184 projects from 12 different countries, and as a result is now among the operators at the top of avant garde design. Innovative technical components, revolutionary styling and a unique personality are the mix of ingredients that will become part of production over the next few years.
For Jonny Mole Design this is another success to add to the many others achieved in over ten years’ activity, including the design of the pink jersey for the 2011 edition of the Italian road cycling race, Giro d’Italia, which established the agency as a leader in the sports world.
“I wanted to take part in this Contest – declares Jonny Moletta – because it is part of a very important international event, the TAIPEI BIKE SHOW, organized in collaboration with the “iF Design Award”, a sort of Oscar for Design.
Right from the start of my career I was lucky enough to cooperate with important industries and it was to be closer to them that in 2011 we opened an office at Taichung, the most important bicycle producing district.
I believe my choices and experience over the years have led to this acknowledgement: we can no longer afford a provincial approach or lack of curiosity; to innovate you need to be both visionary and practical. My team and I have tried to analyse the possible points where we can work to realize a project that is perhaps futuristic, but feasible and useful: even the name we have chosen plays on these contrasts:
“The Dream Machine” counters the usefulness and solidity of a machine with the abstract idea of the liberty of a dream…”
Our bicycle was built with the extraordinary cooperation of four excellent technical partners who had great faith in this project: Vision, Fsa, Selle Italia and Vittoria.
The award ceremony will be held on 23 March 2013 during the TAIPEI CYCLE SHOW in Taiwan.
The side profile of the frame is unmistakable: a single rib runs from the head set to the rear wheel, providing extraordinary stiffness and streamlining.
The DRIVING UNIT system ensures maximum torsion stiffness by combining fork, handlebar and stem in a single monolith and using a disk brake system that can guarantee great performance also under stress and in extreme weather conditions.
Absolutely new in the cycle world, the Dream Machine mounts two TECH BOXES: compartments in the downtube and the top part of the driving unit.
The TECH BOX in the downtube is used to incorporate in the frame the water bottle carrier and electronic gear battery, and the one in the top part of the driving unit is designed to hold a ciclocomputer or other navigation or training instruments.
The choice of components is also the result of careful streamlining studies. The three-spoke wheels, closed crank set and massive central movement, combined with the extremely reactive frame, provides cyclists with a potentially ideal performance which transforms each single Watt impressed on the pedals into speed. The handlebar comes with an extra extension perpendicular to the bike advancement axis located in the bottom part of the handlebar bend.
The braking system used is a hydraulic disk system fully integrated into the carbon frame to give uncluttered design and maximum streamlining.
The Dream Machine, the ideas of the future are already with us.
